WE CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT...

Alexi Lubomirski

Photographer Alexi Lubromiski’s steady ascent in the fashion world speaks to what a bit of pluck and determination can do. Here at MODCo, we champion having the guts to get out there and show the world what you’re made of. So when Alexi confessed it was “pigheadedness” that got him where he is today, it was clear there was a story that needed to be told.

It begins at Brighton University where his class was read a list of the biggest names in the photography world, and promptly told that they would be turned away by all of them. Where the other students saw a roadblock, Alexi saw opportunity, snagging the piece of paper when the teacher left the room.

Armed with his portfolio, Alexi made his way down the list. Just as he was preparing to knock on Mario Testino’s door he received a call from his mother. Not only did she let her son know he was about to meet one of the biggest names in the business, she also confessed to a romantic connection. When the door opened the budding photog blurted out “Hi, my name is Alexi. I think my mom dated your cousin.” Thus began his four-year tenure with Testino.

Today, he shoots celebs like Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow and Natalie Portman for publications like Harpers Bazaar, German Vogue and GQ, as well as venturing into cinematic photo art. Alexi teamed up with MODCo to shoot Lane Bryant’s new 10 million dollar campaign, doing what he does best: “I know how to make a woman feel beautiful. I like to have fun,” he said. “There’s no need to torture ourselves. I want everyone to have a good time.”

Occupation: Fashion Photographer

Hometown: N/A

What projects are you currently working on? Writing a book for my son, finishing my next exhibition, and writing a Reggaeton song in Spanish.

Your artwork explores the impact of technology on our attention span, what would you discern is necessary for an image to have a lasting impression? For me it is the immediate impact.  We flick through magazines and channels so quickly these days that if an image makes me stop for more than the second it takes to go past it, then it has succeeded.

You’ve lived around the world.  If you could close your eyes and be anywhere in an instant, where would you choose? Two places: Lying on a blanket, upstate with my wife and son in the garden under a big maple tree. And, a view point in Bariloche, Argentina where you can see Chile and Argentina at the end of two lakes. You can hear a bird echoing down the valleys three miles way.

Which artists keeps you wanting more? Artists on broader scale are: Director Terrence Malick; Actor Burt Lancaster; Philip Lorca di Corcia; and Musician Yusuf Islam

When are you most impulsive? When I am awake.

To which faults are you most indulgent? Obsession for extremely dark chocolate, and favoring the company of my son to being with adults.

What about your work most gratifies you? Being able to create everyday… loving the fact that I have a hobby as a job… and variety—being able to shoot a model in a studio one day and a celebrity in the desert the next.

Was there a recent project that you had to get done in a crazy short period of time? There was one recent job shooting a certain celebrity for Bazaar where she arrived three hours late, and then said she had to leave in three hours. We had an hour-and-a-half to shoot two covers and an eight-page story.

You’ve worked with some of the sexiest icons in fashion and entertainment. What qualities would you say make a person sexy? Confidence, air of mystery, languages, sharp wit, and being able to laugh at one’s self.

When is patience a virtue? What is worth waiting for? I have no patience… I have to breathe deeply everyday and try to go with the flow… I have patience with my son, that’s it.
